Days 12/13 – July 15/16th Dicky Beach (Caloundra). Teehee.

It has been fun to go to these places we have never heard of, and even more fun when they have a funny name. Starting with the old McDonalds Yass sign meme, a few days later at Broken Head and now at Dicky beach, it is taking all my strength to keep this blog from going down the “Carry On” movie path.

Dicky Beach is at the start of the Sunshine Coast, just next to Caloundra, but a lot quieter. We only had the two nights here, and the main focus was to get ready for our couple of days off grid coming up at Coondoo. The weather forecasts for rain have been dire – there was 58mm of rain at Broken Head the day we left, and Dicky Beach was expected to get double digit rainfall as well. We didn’t see much in the way of the sites of Dicky other than a walk on the beach and checking out a little gallery. Another key element that makes a place nice to stay at is when they have a surf club nearby where you can get a nice pint and a parma.

The van is creating some interest every time we stop, as we knew it would. The teardrop always did too with the most common question being “do you sleep in it?” The Alto is unique in its teardrop shape, and when the party trick of the roof being lifted on it by hydraulics happens, there are usually some interested parties milling around. Today, there was someone that waited to ambush me with the questions away from the van. I went off to the facilities block and was followed by someone I hadn’t seen before. Standing at adjacent urinals he makes the statement “I see you have an interesting set up with the Alto.” I should have said that it’s not what I call it and it was a bit of a personal statement, but I didn’t. What is it with strangers having a chat while standing and having their Alto in hand? Yesterday while I showered, I heard a guy in the toilet stalls returning quotes for his business while he did his business. Don’t get it myself and it’s why we like to get an ensuite where possible.

Dicky Beach Caravan Park Google Review

While they do have a funny name, this is not a funny caravan park. For a Sunshine Coast park, this was spacious and well appointed. It should be noted that it is dangerously close to the Dicky Beach Surf Club where you can get 10% off your pint and parma by becoming a member for a $1. Let it be noted that the more beers you have, the better value the $1 membership gives you. Close to beach and some essential shops. The facilities are a little aged but clean and they have thankfully avoided the temptation to put in those devilish shower curtains in the showers. Would definitely stay again, particularly before my $1 yearly membership runs out. 5 stars.
