Days 16/17 – July 19/20th Hervey Bay. Not such of a whale of a time.

Coming from a festival with limited facilities, we checked into our next location for a couple of nights and booked the luxury of an ensuite. The weather forecast for Coondoo was a bit dire and we expected mud and lots of wet clothes. In the end we escaped without too much discomfort, but the hot shower was well welcomed, as well as a private bathroom. We planned for washing, recuperating and getting sorted for our push to Cairns, which is what we did. This included a couple of van fixes.

I spent a bunch of time in the morning trying to adjust the hose connection for our water supply with little luck, but figured out what parts I may need and went and purchased those. On my return I fiddled for a while longer until the person in the van next to us came out and had a chat. You know how you can’t get a plumber to turn up when you need them? Well, I manifested one out of thin air and he had a look, helped me to finish the job and didn’t even want a beer in return. What a magical moment.

To be honest, I found Hervey Bay a bit aged and far too busy, certainly not like I remembered from the last trip. The weather didn’t help and when tried to have a walk, the wind seemed to want us to go back to where we came from. Linda did suggest that there was a book shop café that we should have a look at, and unfortunately that was closed on a Monday. Fortunately, it was next to a real life, working and active pinball parlour. You could just go to this unmanned room, put your two bucks in and play some great pinballs. I am enjoying Linda looking for bookshops because so far it has got me some cool vinyl and an hour of old-time entertainment.

We did manage a little time at Urangan where I got a haircut at a traditional barber, Linda met a nice person running an art and clothes shop and we walked along the 1km pier in near gale force wind to blow some cobwebs out. We are spider free now for sure. Certainly, the nicer end of Fraser Coast in my honest opinion.

We discovered this caravan park and stayed in an ensuite which was well appointed other than the door falling apart at the bottom. This did not impact performance, and the shower had a fully functioning door instead of a sinful shower curtain. It was windy, which was indicated by the palm trees pretty much staying at a 45 degree angle for the first night of our stay. Also well done on putting us on a site next to a plumber on holidays, he was very helpful with a van issue we had. 4 stars.
