August 30. Elliot Head. Quick Beach

One night stands are fleeting by their very definition. They can be a just a moment in time or they create intrigue and a desire to follow up further. On arrival at Elliot Head we only have time to have a quick look at the beach before the rain comes down and ensures we are bunkered for the night in the cosy van. In the morning though, we are packed and ready to go early, and head down for a coffee and walk on the beach before the drive.
The intrigue was a huge river mouth of sand, as soft as fresh powder snow and as hard to walk on. Mangrove seeds are sprouting over the whole area, and it gives an incredible outlook. With only an hour to explore, we are intrigued as to what else this place would show on further investigation. Also, after having to go through Bundaberg to get to Elliot Head, I am not convinced Linda was that happy that we missed visiting the Bundaberg Rum distillery. She had to resort to getting a bottle from Dan Murphy's instead. If we are up this way again, we may revisit this brief encounter.
The trip out in the morning goes through Childers, a nice little town with good op shops, numerous bakeries and the Chad Morgan museum. I failed to mention this little tidbit on the way up, but out the back of a book shop there is a dedicated Chad Morgan museum with some of his gold records, plenty of photos, and a statue of him carved with a chainsaw out of a tree. For those unfamiliar with the Sheik from Scrubby Creek, he was a country and western star in the 70’s, who was recognisable by his massive overbite which was only rivalled in size by his alcohol problem and womanising. The museum is free to look around, but you must be escorted by the curator. Every. Step. Of. The. Way. Her commentary was incessant on whatever piece you may happen to have cast an eye on. I see an obvious similarity to Chad and ask politely if she is related and if this is why she is so keen to keep this venture going. No, she was just a fan. Must be something in the water.
Elliot Heads Caravan Park google review.
The park could not be more Elliot Heads if it tried. It is right next to the beach, right next to the only coffee shop and in amongst all the development about to hit this place like a tonne of bricks. With a newly built amenities block with an amazing amount of porcelain facilities, it warrants a second visit if we are ever around these parts again. 4 stars
