August 28 - 30: Uluru
I had been a bit nervous about visiting Uluru, wondering if it would just be over commercialised. I needn’t have worried - it was sensational. Dave and I avoided most of the things targeted at the tourists, instead opting to walk around the base. It took us close to four hours, but in that time, we got to experience the spiritual feeling of being ‘on country’ that my Aboriginal friends speak about. It was a privilege just to be there.
We went on a ‘tour’ of the stars, led by an Aboriginal astrologer, who was able to speak about the ways many different indigenous groups view the night sky. We looked at the stars through some huge telescopes – just amazing.
The other highlight was hearing Icehouse play their concert from afar. Standing at the lookout, listening to the music, singing and dancing in the dark with the lights in the distance. A wonderful night to remember...
