May 31 Mimbi Caves

Our visit to Mimbi Caves was pretty special. The campground was spectacular, surrounded by escarpments. It was on Aboriginal land, with around 20 unpowered sites.

It was also freaky…faced by a snake just beside my door…which I later found out was a death adder…

The cave tour was amazing. Conducted by an Aboriginal woman, Rose, telling stories and teaching the visitors to their land. Stories of her family being taken away as part of the stolen generations and how she was saved by the ‘manager’ who told the authorities that she was ’his’. She also taught us about bush medicine and the stories of the caves. We started the tour with a smoking ceremony and ended with billy tea and damper. It was a highlight for us.
