June 9/11 - Point Samson
We had been looking forward to visiting Point Samson, as we understood it to be a beautiful little seaside village. It certainly was not a highlight of our trip. The time we spent at Point Samson and the surrounding areas has been quite confronting. The extent of the mining in the Pilbra is extensive and the damage to the environment is immense.
We visited Dampier, Karratha, Wickham and had morning coffee at Port Hedland on the way. We saw salt mines, the massive North West Shelf LNG plant, massive machines digging for iron ore, trains with hundreds of carriages to transport the iron ore. We also saw Aboriginal artwork which is thousands of years old…and Red Dog.
