August 21st to 24th. Charters Towers, Ayr and Cape Hillsborough
Driving was a bit challenging on the way to Charters Towers. There are no fences, so many animals cross the road. Some don’t make it. We saw many cows, some dear, kangaroos, a magnificent wedge tailed eagle, some bustards and a lot of roadkill on this part of our trip.
Charters Towers is hot and dusty, with beautiful Art Deco buildings…and another shop selling records.
Ayr was all about the footy. Dave watched the footy while I did the washing…the jobs still need to be done while travelling.
Someone we met along the way recommended Cape Hillsborough, so we thought it would be a good place to visit. Kangaroos come to the beach at sunrise each morning. Apparently, they used to come looking for mangrove seed pods washed up by the tide, but now the ranger feeds the kangaroos a small amount of food, so they keep turning up. They are lovely to see, but it is also funny to see the line of people up by 6am to see the kangaroos be fed.
Cape Hillsborough itself is stunning, and we spent time bushwalking through the beautiful National Park, enjoying the walks and the views.
