Day 38. July 27. Hughenden via Charters Towers. Missed it by that much.
I am not sure how many episodes of Backroads you may have watched on the ABC, but we have seen a few. Heather Ewart traverses little towns across Australia, bringing insight into the communities and what they do in the remoteness of the outback. What has always amazed me is that whenever she turns up, there is always that towns yearly rodeo, or their once a year party, or their yearly B&S ball that she gets to go to and enjoy. She is so lucky to have great timing! I have also noticed that it seems to happen to Michael Palin, Billy Connolly and various other celebrities as they do their travel shows. We miss the Charters Towers show day by a day. We have missed the Townsville Rodeo by a week. We missed Darren Hanlon playing by a week near Gympie. I’ll have to come to terms with that, even with my three appearances on Neighbours and one with Guy Pearce on Jack Irish. At least the stars align with Darwin and we will be there during Darwin festival.
Hughenden, however, hasn’t had an event to miss for nigh on 30 years from what we can tell. It does have a dinosaur, and a great old pub with a pool table that is round. Wait till someone tells them about rectangles. Having a couple of schooners for the price of a Docklands pint, it is fine by me. We have hit our first average caravan park. Dusty, windy, old and neither of us had the guts to use the showers without taking an Aqium bath first, so we move on and are gone by 8am the next day.
